Board of Deacons

As stated in the PC(USA) Book of Order, “The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress” (BOO G-2.0201).

The SCPC Board of Deacons undertakes to fulfil this ministry through making hospital visits to those wishing for church contact during hospital stays, providing funeral meals for families experiencing the loss of a loved one, keeping in contact with church members who are no longer able to come to church on a regular basis, and supporting various charitable organizations. This last task is accomplished in part by taking a monthly collection for a designated organization. Recent organizations benefiting from this include the following: USO, Lady’s Inn, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, SCPC Mission Trip, Kindercottage, Bridgeway, Volunteers in Medicine, Sunshine Ministry, Youth in Need, Doctors Without Borders, Ministerial/Homeless Alliance in St Charles, and SCPC youth mission trip. The Deacons also organize two annual blood drives, and have sponsored several drives for FISH of St. Charles, the Easter Collection, the Back to School Drive for students of local schools which collected coats and dental hygiene products, and were able to provide fifteen children through Kindercottage with books, toys, clothes, socks, shoes, and underwear from our Angel Tree campaign.

The Board of Deacons has also sponsored a Fair Trade Shopping Event, and is committed to supporting fair trade practices of countries around the world.
